In honour of the occasion, we look back at some of the most iconic kisses of all time, from big screen to real moments captured on camera.

The worldwide smooching day is taking place today on Thursday July 6.
It was established in 2006 to celebrate lovers, and is now an annual event.
Many people take advantage of the day to pucker up to their significant other.
The picture of a sailor passionately kissing a nurse in Times Square to celebrate the end of World War II became an iconic image in US history.
The iconic image has since been re-enacted by couples thousands of times in Times Square.
Attempts to solve the mystery around the true identities of the couple also included Life Magazine issuing a plea for the couple involved in the photograph to come forward in 1980, receiving multiple claims.
After years of dispute, the couple in the 1945 image who won the nation’s heart was revealed to be George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman.

Jack and Rose’s passionate snog on the front deck of the Titanic was recently all-time.
The romantic moment between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters takes place seconds after Rose utters the famous line, “I’m flying”.
The multi-Oscar winning film fought off stuff competition from The Lady and the Tramp’s meatball scene, and the smooch between Sam and Molly in Ghost.
Jack and Rose's kiss at the front of the Titanic won the heart of viewers around the globe, and many re-create the embrace on boats today

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding day balcony kiss

The royal wedding was broadcast to an estimate two billion people in more than 180 countries around the world via reports, photos and TV pictures in 2011.
One of the most heart-warming snaps was of the newlyweds sharing a tender kiss on the balcony, and was cheered on by a 500,000-strong crowds.
What was better is they did it again after the groom told his bride: “One more kiss? Go on, come here!"
The second, two minutes later, was longer, deeper and more tender and went on for 1.25 seconds.
Wills and Kate sealed their marriage with a kiss on the Buckingham Palace balcony watched by an estimated billion

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt

One of the most famous kissing paintings is The Kiss (Lovers) by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.
The square-shaped canvas featured a couple embracing; their bodied entwined and covered in elaborate robes.
The romantic piece was created in 1907-1908 and now inspires modern day lovers in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in Vienna, Austria

Nothing beats a kiss in the rain, as actors Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling proved in The Notebook.
The passionate embrace comes at the point in the movie when Rachel's character Allie is due to the married, but she meets up with her first love, Noah played by Ryan, before the wedding.
Tensions are running high as the encounter stirs up old feelings, culminating in the rain-soaked kiss.

Lovers And Rioters, Vancouver 2011 by Rich Lam

It was a kiss that caught the world's attention, thanks to the tenderness of the moment with chaos raging around them.
Scott Jones, from Perth, and his Canadian girlfriend Alexandra Thomas were famously pictured kissing during the Vancouver riots in 2011.
The drama occurred when thousands of ice hockey fans took to the streets after the city's team lost the season-ending Stanley Cup Final.
As the mania swirled around the town, Alexandra was knocked to the ground by riot police before  Scott came to her rescue giving her a kiss that won the heart of thousands.

Spiderman’s upside down kiss with friend and love interest Mary Jane has become one of the most iconic kisses of all time, and was recently named the seventh best movie kiss.
The fact the embrace takes place in the rain makes it all the more romantic.
